Van Order Research
1860-1930

        Updated: September 21, 2004

Our connection to the Van Order family is unknown at this time.  We have one letter from Maryette (Van Pelt) Van Order, dated Feb. 12, 1865, Troy, PA.   The letter is written to her cousin, Harriet Deuel.   She mentions John is making whiskey as usual, she has a new baby, about 6 1/2 weeks old, and that she and Gusta can get along.  The 1880 Census, Blossburg, Tioga, PA,  has John as a liqueur merchant, wife Mary, a daughter Augusta, and a daughter Josephane 16 years old.

On our recent trip to New York (Oct, 2003),   we were overwhelmed with the amount of information we found.  Unfortunately we only had a couple hours at the Steel Library in Elmira.   They had  several directories for Corning, New York which provided a lot of information.  If all goes well we will be able to return October 2004 to continue our research at the Steel Library.  We'll just have to wait to see what happens.   We are happy to provide our research for your personal files.  Mary & Roberta

John Van Order died 1886, at 59 years old.  He is buried in the Blosburg Cemetery, Tioga County, PA along with his son, Sylvanus Van Order, who died 1875, at 24 years old.   John and Maryette Van Pelt also had two daughters, Augusta & Josephine.  Maryette Van Order moved to Corning and is found living with her daughter, Josephine and son-in-law, Charles Utley, in 1900 census.  She is also living with Josephine Utley, a widow, in the 1920 census.  Maryette Van Order born 1831, died Jan. 12, 1921.   Buried Hope Cemetery, Corning, NY.

Augusta Van Order of Blossburg and  Francis E. Schenk of Bradford, were married at Blossburg, Sept. 2, 1880.  I have been unable to find any census listing for Augusta and Francis Schenk or spelling variations through Heritage Quest.  Ancestry.com might be another option.   Augusta may possibly be our only lead for descendants of John & Maryette Van Order.

Josephine Van Order, daughter of John Van Order and Maryette Van Pelt, was born Dec. 27, 1866 and died June 25, 1942.  She married Charles D. Utley about 1883.   Charles Utley was the son of Wells (?) Utley & Mary Wells.  Charles is listed with his mother in the 1870 PA Census but unable to find him or parents in the 1860 census through HQ.

Charles Utley b 8-6-1853  & d 7-24-1919     b 1859 & d 7-24-1919
Historical Society as two different dates.  Buried Hope Cemetery, Corning, NY.

Charles Utley and Josephine Van Order had 5 children, 2 died prior to the 1900 census.

        1.  Harry R. Utley, born Dec. 27, 1886, died Nov. 29, 1945.  Buried Hope Cemetery (Lot #218),  Corning, NY.

2.  Madge Utley, born Aug. 4, 1888, Corning, NY.   She was a retired Corning Class Works inspector.  and died December 18, 1978, Founders Pavilion, Corning, NY.  She was survived by several cousins.   Burial was in Hope Cemetery.  Stover Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

        3.  Edgar S. Utley, born 1890, died June 14, 1893

4.  Bessie M. Utley, born Jan. 11, 1884, Blossburg, PA.  She married Jan. 19, 1910, Harry A. Erwin.  They are on the 1910 Census, Corning, NY.  Roll 1080, Page 102. River Road.  Harry 28 born NY, Bessie 26 born PA.  It looks like Harry's father, Samuel @ 83 years born NY & mother Susan (Williams) @ 66 years born NY, are enumerated with them.  Very difficult to read the ages and years married.  But probably the second marriage for Samuel.  Susan 32 years married, one child still living (Charles).  It looks like they may have a servent living with them.

By the 1920 Census,Corning, NY, Harry & Bessie have a son Curtis, 7 years old.   Samuel Erwin (62 years old) step brother is also living with them on River Road.  Curtis W. Erwin born Aug. 8, 1912, died Jan 17,1960.  Buried Hope Cemetery, Corning, NY.   1930 census may show more children.

1870 NY Census, Steuben, Town of Corning, Samuel & Amelia Erwin have several children listed, including Samuel, who is 12 years old.  1880 Census, Samuel has a new wife, Susin.  Harry born a couple years later.
Have not been able to find this family in the 1900 census.

        5.   Howard Utley, born May 28, 1895, died Aug. 28, 1895.  (Sept. 6, 1895?)    Buried Hope Cemetery, Corning, NY.

Corning Directories for 1931-1941 list Harry, Josephine and Madge still living together but the address has changed to 84 Perry Ave.  Harry was a 40 year old widow in the 1930 census, we don't know if there were any children or if he remarried after 1930.  Harry died Nov. 29, 1945.

Obituaries for this family are essential to determine if there is a line to follow.  Steuben County Historical Society obits start in 1967.  They have none earlier.

Civil War Pension records need to be checked to see if John Van Order served.
