FRIENDS OF HARRIET DEUEL
Updated: December 05, 2003
There are letters from Martha Thomas (7), Eveline Osmun (3), Emma Trapp (1) and a cousin, Antoinette Nowlan (3). All lived in the Newfield, Pony Hollow area. The letters mention the same people for the most part. There are no letters from Hosea (Breese) but several mention his name. Hosea Breese enlisted the day after James M. Clark and they served in the same company. Thad Deuel also served in the same company. Letters addressed to Harriet Deuel, Etna, Tompkins County, NY.
MARTHA THOMAS was the daughter of Israel and Emaline Clark. She had a brother James Madison Clark who served in the Civil War. (Harriet had a brother James Madison Deuel who served and died Mar 25, 1863.) The reference is mostly Madison Clark, however, Madison Deuel is mention when he died. The 1860 NY Census, Family # 46, Martha Thomas is enumerated with her parents and two brothers James M. (19) and William M. (17). Martha is 22 and has a daughter Ella J. who is a year old. They are living in the town of Newfield, Trumansburgh Post Office address.
EVELINE (EVA) OSMUN was the daughter Isaac Osmun (son of Daniel) and Permilla Metcalf. The Osmun farm is next to the Clark's, as they are enumerated Family # 45 in 1860 Census. The name is Osborn on the census but the family is definately Osmun. This family is aka OZMUN. Eva is not living with them but her brothers and sisters are, Freeman 24, William 21, Adeleide 17, Louise 14, Eliz. 12, Ophelia 9, and George 6. Eveline Orsmen 19, is enumerated with the family of William and Claressa Brown, Family #33, Town of Cayuta, Schuyler County, Alpine Post Office address. Hosea Breese 21, is living there as well. Hosea's mother was Alvira Osmun, daughter of John Osmun. Eveline is enumerated with her parents 1850 NY Census in Erin, Chemung County, NY and Cayuta 1865 NY State Census.
Also in Cayuta, the SWARTWOOD farm is Family # 27. William 53, Pamila 46, Morton 27, George 24, Ettie 20, Catherine 18, Leroy 16, and Frank 12. William Swartwood is the son of Alexander. Family # 29 is Samuel BROWN and his wife Kate (Catharine Swartwood, daughter of Jonathan). Both families are mentioned.
(ANTOINETTE NOWLAN sent a letter to Harriet's sister, Sally Ann, dated March 1850, Elmira, NY. They moved to Newfield and enumerated 1860 Census Family # 49, by 1870 Census the family is in Blossburg, Tioga, PA. Antoinette Nowlan is a cousin to Harriet and we are still trying to determine the connection.)
